Defending champion Portmore United jumped to the
top of the Digicel Premier League (DPL) with a hard-fought 1-0
win over Arnett Gardens at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
A brilliant goal from 35 metres by Omar Campbell
in the 39th minute silenced the Arnett Gardens faithful after he
picked up a poor clearance from Anthowe Dawkins and saw his shot
crashed off the upright on its way in.
Goalkeeper Joel Messam was stunned and so too was
Member of Parliament Dr Omar Davies who immediately inquired
about Campbell. "Who is that young man? Has he ever scored any
goal like that before? Why here"?
It was a magnificent goal deservedly to win any
match and duly pushed Portmore to the top of the league with
their second consecutive win after beating Rivoli United 2-0 on
Sunday
The Linval-Dixon coached Portmore United moved to
six points while Arnett Gardens which was losing their second
game 0-1, remained pointless and as early as the season is, the
fans are disgruntled.
Over at Lynch Park, the visiting Harbour View
were held to a 0-0 draw by St George’s FC and slipped from first
place to second on four points. St George’s inched to two points
following their 1-1 draw with Waterhouse on Sunday.
Meanwhile newcomers Meadhaven and second year
team Sporting Central Academy battled to a 2-2 draw at the
Waterhouse Mini-Stadium.
Meadhaven twice led when Weston Forrest, formerly
of Waterhouse, utilized his knowledge of the home field and
fired home in the 42nd minute.
Former Cavaliers and Excelsior Manning Cup
player, Alanzo Adlam leveled the score from the penalty spot in
the 70th minute. But another former Waterhouse player, Andre
Hickling put Meadhaven back in front in the 81st minute and
looked as if they would secure their first win of the season.
But last week’s two-goal hero, Hughan Gray,
popped up in the 90th minute for a share of the point for
Sporting Central.
The Clarendon outfit sits on four points while
Meadhaven are on two points and have already surprised most
pundits after being held by Tivoli Gardens last Sunday to a 1-1
draw.
At the Prison Oval in Spanish Town, home team
Rivoli United lost 0-1 to Waterhouse with the prolific Jermaine
"Tuffy" Anderson heading home in the 34th minute. It was his
second goal in two games since joining Waterhouse from St James
team Granville United.
It was also the second defeat for the promoted
Rivoli and they remained pointless while Waterhouse are on two
from two games.
Last season’s runner-up Tivoli Gardens played to
a 0-0 draw with Reno at STETHS for their second stalemate
following their 1-1 draw with Meadhaven last Sunday.
Tivoli Gardens with new coach Lenworth Hyde Snr
moved to two points while Reno of Westmoreland was securing
their first point of the season following their 1-2 loss to
Sporting Central.
In the late kickoff last night, Boys Town and
Village United played to a 1-1 draw at the Trelawny Stadium.
Troy Smith, just as he did last season converted
from the spot in the 51st minute to give Village the lead but
Peter Keyes, with his second of the season equalized in the 67th
minute.
Boy’s Town which dropped two points share second
spot on four points along with Sporting Central and Waterhouse
while Village secured their first of the season.
