Denzil Watson, a striker on a mission

Were you to watch Denzil Watson on the football field you would not doubt his talent. So skilful, so talented, so aware as a striker is he, that in his final year at Glenmuir high School, he was already getting on the scoresheet for Hazard (now Portmore United.

Now Watson plies his trade for Boys’ Town and has just returned to the Premier League after a stint with Parham in Antigua where he scored nine goals.

He has played four games for Boys’ Town and scored once in the Premier League and twice in one game in the Jackie Bell Knockout competition.

Watson has never been a prolific scorer but he scores very important goals, something that has been missing from Boys’ Town this season. Now that he is back, along with George Vernal, Watson has made Boys’ Town a serious attacking unit.

From 1999-2001, Watson was a part of the Glenmuir DaCosta Cup setup and was in two finals with them. Though, those were failures, Watson did manage to lift the Ben Francis Knockout Cup and before that enjoyed holding the triple championship at the under-16 level.

At 24 years old, the best of Watson is yet to come but already he is showing himself to be very dangerous. With a thunderous kick and a knack for controlling the ball and keeping his composure in the tightest of spaces, the youngster might just provide Vernal with the kind of support he needs to punish teams.

Watson has an easy-going attitude about him and this tends to lull his opponents to sleep and that is when he strikes. What is good about his on-field attitude is the fact that even with that he manages to put in a lot of work. He tackles defenders and makes their jobs difficult. Though not a big player, he holds up the ball very well, and his awareness of where the goal is, is uncanny.

Boys’ Town started the league poorly but have seemingly turned the corner and are now in sixth position, with just goal difference between them and St. Georges above them.

However, the season is not nearly finished and there isn’t a great deal of points between Boys’ Town and a drop to last position where August Town have 21 points.

This means Boys’ Town will need all the skill Watson can muster, and goals might be even more important, with so many teams close in terms of goals scored against those conceded.

If Watson can manage to keep his team out of trouble with performances like the Jackie Bell game against Harbour View, though they lost, he will be worthy of this spotlight.
