Former champions Tivoli Gardens jumped into third position with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Waterhouse FC in the feature game of the eighth round of the Cash Plus Premier League at the Edward Sega Stadium yesterday.

Tivoli, which started the day in seventh position, took advantage of the top four teams inactivity, moving up four places with 12 points, the same as second placed Harbour View and one behind the leader Seba United on 13.

A Jermaine Gray strike in the 86th minute secured Tivoli’s third win from eight starts with three draws and two defeats.

Tivoli’s defender Dwight Heron won possession from Waterhouse’s national invitee Damion “Kappo” Williams in the centre circle and found striker Horace Howell with a long ball who in turn whipped in a cross to substitute Navian Boyd.

With one touch Boyd deflected the ball to Gray who made no mistake.

Waterhouse, the 2005 champion, coming on the heals on a 2-3 defeat against Harbour View and last Sunday’s 1-1 tie with Boys’ Town slumped to their third defeat dropping from sixth to be in eight position on nine points.

Over at the UWI Bowl, Arnett Gardens had to come from behind to hold August Town 1-1 in a bruising game that saw two red and six yellow cards.

Daniel Shaw gave the home team August Town with a stupendous freekick in the 27th minute but Kevin “Pele” Wilson produced a moment of magic to level the scores in the 53rd minute.

Shaw who Arnett Gardens two seasons ago hit a perfect shot from approximately 22 metres past an out of position Julian McLeish in goal.

McLeish’s defensive wall looked more like a zinc fence and posed no problem for Shaw, who must have been licking his lips when he saw the gaping holes.

It was a deserved lead after August Town dominated the early proceedings to end the half 1-0.

But Arnett responded like true champions to take full control of the second period and found the equalizer in the 53rd minute from the dangerous Wilson.

If you thought Shaw’s goal was good, Wilson’s volley is already a contender for the goal of the season.

In a buildup involving three players Arnett Gardens caught August Town on the counter attack. First the tricky Leon Strickland found the overlapping Horace Sharpe down the left flank and his one time cross was met spectacularly with a tremendous volley from just inside the box.

Wilson pivoted, waited, then flashed a powerful right-footer that flew into the top right hand corner of the goal, giving the outstanding goalkeeper Devon Haughton, no chance.

Both teams got chances to win the game with the visitors creating more chances but had to settle for a share of the points.

Arnett have moved to nine points but remain ninth, while August Town stay 10th on eight points.

At the Lynch Park in Portland, home team St George’s FC won the battle of the promoted teams with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory, climbing to fifth position on 11 points.

Goals by Kanute Harrison (24th), Dale Walker (48th) and Delroy Dennis (51st) secured St George’s third win of the season from eight games.

The competition’s leading goalscorer Onekie Ford gave Sporting Central the lead in the eighth minute with his sixth goal of the a season.

Ford latched onto a square and fired past a helpless Ralston Robinson from close range.

But the Clarendon-based outfit could not hold the lead and succumbed to their third loss of the season and have dropped from fifth to ninth place.

Trelawny’s Village United and Reno of Westmoreland played to a 0-0 at the Elliston Wakeland Centre in a clash of the battling teams rooted to the bottom of the 12-team league.

Village United are still without a win this season and remain on three points while Reno are second from bottom with seven points.

Both teams are finding it extremely hard to score goals while conceding 25 goals between them after eight rounds.
