Playing on their home turf for the first time this season, Sporting Central Academy, blanked Tivoli Gardens 2-0 as the Cash Plus Premier League resumed on Sunday with only four games.

The top three teams were out of action as defending champion Harbour View and last season runners-up Portmore United were in Trinidad and Tobago participating in the Caribbean Football Union’s Club Championship of which one team will qualify to the 2008 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup.

Harbour View defeated Portmore United 2-0 to advance to the semifinal where they will play San Juan Jabloteh of Trinidad and Tobago.

Back home at Brancourt, goals by Owen Gordon in the 74th minute and Winston Griffiths in the 90th carried the promoted Clarendon-based Sporting Central, a massive upset win over their more fancied opponent Tivoli Gardens.

The win was made even more impressive as Sporting Central finished the game with nine men. Their uphill battle started in the 13th minute when Dwayne Ford was red carded and later Christopher Mason ejected in the 87th by Lewin Purser.

Playing 10 men, Sporting Central was awarded a penalty in the 74th minute and defender Owen Gordon stepped up to convert, giving the home team the lead.

Tivoli went in search of the equaliser but could not break down Sporting’s defence well marshalled by Terry Alves and Linval Lewis, Owen Gordon and Romaine Barnes.

With three minutes of regulation time left, Sporting was reduced to nine men and Tivoli Gardens threw every thing in the kitchen, including the kitchen sink at them for the equalizer, to no avail.

In fact, that approach allowed Sporting to double their lead on the counter attack on the stroke of full time. Substitute Winston Griffiths, a former national player, fired past Damion Crooks in goal to seal the historic victory.

Sporting Central in securing their second win of the campaign moved up to fifth position on nine points, only four behind the leaders Seba United which was idled.

Tivoli Gardens slipped to seventh place, also on nine points, after suffering their second defeat on the season from seven games.

Over at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), home team Reno FC scored their first win edging St Georges FC 2-1.

Ricardo Scott grabbed a brace in the 35th and 69th minutes to give Reno a 2-0 advantage. Substitute Richardo Watson reduced the deficit in the 85th minute but Reno held on for the win.

Scott opened the scoring after latching on to a Kendrie Quarrie pass and rifled home as the opposing defenders appealed for offside.

In a dominant performance by Reno, Scott doubled the lead with a fierce grounder in the 69th.

But St Georges never lay down and die, the Donovan Duckie-coach boys rallied and found their consolation goal with five minutes remaining. The speedy Richardo Watson outpaced the Reno backline, walked around goalkeeper Dennis Taylor before slotting home.

The Westmoreland-based Reno remains in 11th position on six points only ahead of the struggling Village while St Georges out of Portland are in eighth position on eight points.

At Drewsland, former champion Waterhouse FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Boys’ Town at home after once again failing to hold onto their lead.

Weston Forrest gave them the a 46th minute lead after Boys’ Town goalkeeper Philmore Crumbie failed to gather a cross properly.

Waterhouse should have increase their lead and put the game beyond Boys’ Town but wasted numerous goalscoring opportunities and paid the price.

Defender Fabian Watkins scored the unlikely equalizer directly from the corner spot in the 79th minute after the ball evaded everyone including the goalkeeper Maurice Evans.

Boys’ Town stayed in fourth position on 10 points while Waterhouse follows closely in sixth place on nine points and could pay the price for not finishing off teams for the second game running.

Two weeks ago they led Harbour View 2-0 but conceded three goals in 20 minutes to lose 2-3.

Over at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, home team Arnett Gardens had to come from behind to secure a disappointing 1-1 draw against bottom team Village United.

After seven rounds, Arnett became only the second team not to defeat Village and must be cursing their luck after a host of miss chances.

Ian McAnuff stunned the home fans by tapping home a Leon Irving cross in the 60th minute at the back post.

Arnett sprung to life and five minutes later they found the equalizer through substitute Leon Strickland in the 65th minute.

Strickland who came on in the 54th minute, received a pass from Khouri Pickersgill, beat a defender before firing home for a share of the points.

Arnett Gardens moves to eight points in ninth position while Village stayed rooted to the bottom on two points from seven games.

The competition continued on Wednesday with another four games.
