Former champion Portmore United went atop of the Cash Plus Premier League for the first time after crushing Tivoli Gardens 3-0 at the Edward Seaga Stadium while Arnett scored the first win of the season. Portmore in securing their second victory leapt from seventh to first with goals from Onandi Lowe (2nd), Kevin Deerr (86th) and Adrian Reid (88th) with just six points separating top from bottom. Tivoli’s defeat might have attributed to the players and management not seeing eye to eye on some internal issues. Portmore goals came as a major boost after scoring just once in their three previous games from the penalty spot.
In the Trench Town derby at Collie Smith Drive, Arnett Gardens registered their first win with star striker Kevin Wilson (10th) and Leon Strickland (84th) securing maximum points. Discarded national striker Kevin “Pele” Wilson who missed a penalty against Waterhouse last week made amends with a quickly taken free kick to give the “Junglist” the lead. But it was not until six minutes from time that the visitors made sure of the points when the Strickland scored on the counter after Boys’ Town went hunting for the equalizer in the dying moments. Arnett quickly climbed up the table in sixth position on six points while Boys’ Town slipped to ninth on five points.
At the Harbour View Mini-Stadium, Sporting Central blew a two-goal lead and maximum points against Harbour View drawing 2-2 after leading two nil at the break. Sporting Central stunned the Harbour View crowd with first half goals by Karl Wiggan and Hughan Gray in the 18th and 44th minutes respectively, but two penalties by defender Christopher Harvey in the 55th and 90th minutes, salvaged a point for the champions. Harbour View was lucky to have came away with a point and after starting the day in pole position on five points have dropped to fifth on six points in what is turning out to be a tightly contested league. New boys Sporting Central must have cursed their luck after leading 2-1 with time running out they missed several clear-cut opportunities to kill off the game but paid the price to their profligacy in front of goal. Just like rookie Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton yesterday, they made some rookie mistakes and paid the price. Hamilton lost the World Championship title by just one point but fortunately for Sporting, they have the entire season to atone for their mistakes.
At Drewsland, home team Waterhouse got the better of the struggling Reno 2-1 with an own goal from Shane Edwards, the former Waterhouse striker in the 27th minute and Jomo Gordon in the 30th to secure their second win of the season. Nicholy Findlayson pulled on e back from the spot in the 72nd minute as Reno slumped to their second consecutive defeat to be on just two point from four games.
At Lynch Park in Portland, the visiting Seba United edged St Georges 2-1 with Ricardo Geddes (66th) and Wilfred smith (77th) finding the score sheet as the St James team registered their second win. Damion Harwood gave St Georges a 10th minute lead but the home team could not hold Seba at bay even after playing with a one-man advantage for most of the second half. Seba’s Oliver Trail was sent for an early shower for a second bookable offence in the 50th minute.
August Town with a goal in each half defeated home team Village United 2-0 at the Elleston Wakeland Centre to go joint top with seven points. Daniel Shaw (38th) and substitute Nicholas McCreath (90+) secured August Town’s second win of the season. Village on the other hand remain rooted to the bottom of the table with one point from four games which is a signal that all is not well in the camp. Head coach Christopher Russell resigned after two rounds leaving assistant St Vincentian Dale Mercury to lead the charge. However, former coach Fitzroy Reid who Russell took over format the beginning of the season will be back in charge.
