Portmore United clinched NPL title

Portmore United clinched the National Premier League (NPL) title after coming from behind to hold Harbour View 1-1 at the Ferdie Neita Park last night.

Discarded national player Jermaine Hue gave the outgoing champions Harbour View the lead in the 13th minute but the talented Steven Morrissey levelled the scores in the 33rd minute.

Portmore United champions in 1993 and 2003 under the name Hazard United, before changing to Portmore United and relocated from Clarendon to St Catherine where they won again in 2005, have now secured their fourth title.

The Linval Dixon-coached team now has 68 points, an unassailable lead on nine points with only three games remaining ahead of a Tivoli Gardens team in which they hold a better head-to-head record.

Portmore and Tivoli Gardens are scheduled to meet on the final day and it means that Portmore would have to lose all their three remaining games and Tivoli would have to win all their games.

Even if Tivoli beat Portmore to level the head-to-head record, Portmore has a far superior goal difference to see them home.

Harbour View, the Caribbean Club champions stayed in fourth spot on 49 points.

At the Collie Smith Drive sports Complex, home team Boys' Town edged Tivoli Gardens 2-1 and effectively killed off their opponent's title challenge with three rounds remaining.

Goals by Shawn McKoy in the 21st and Xavean Virgo in the 55th minutes paved the way pushed Boys' Town to their 13th win of the season.

Jermaine Allen scored a consolation goal for Tivoli in the 89th minute to bring some respectability to the scoreline but the game was good as over.

Third-placed Boys' Town moved to 53 points, while second-placed Tivoli Gardens saw their title hopes went up in smoke after suffering their second consecutive loss to remain on 59 points.

In a battle of the cellar teams at the UWI Bowl, home team August Town missed several goalscoring opportunities and lost 0-1 to Reno.

Rayon Gayle grabbed the winner in the fourth minute firing home from close range in the box for a crucial win for the Westmoreland team.

Both teams started the day on 34 points, with Reno in 11th and August Town in 12th and with only two teams being relegated it was an intense dogfight all the way.

Reno with their seventh win moved to 37 points but still remain in 11th spot while August Town stayed rooted to the bottom on 34 points and now face the Herculean task of surviving the drop.

At the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, former champions Arnett Gardens eased their relegation worries with a hard fought 1-0 win over St George's.

Horace Sharpe netted a 88th minute penalty to lift Arnett Gardens into ninth spot on 39 points, the same as St George's but on a better head-to-head record.

Sharpe also scored a penalty when Arnett Gardens defeated Harbour View 1-0 recently.

While Arnett Gardens are heading in the right direction in climbing up the ladder and are two spots and two points above the relegation zone.

The Portland-based St George's have now fallen into the clutches of the relegation battlers in 10th place and with three games remaining are in a spot of bother.

Only last week St George's fired head coach Donovan Duckie who led them to seventh spot prior to the start of the final round but since they have lost both games under new coach Geoffrey Maxwell.

Meanwhile Village United continued their impressive display winning their ninth game in 16 matches to move to 45 points and safely from relegation.

Omar Allen in the 16th and a 85th minute penalty from Troy Smith enabled Village to see off Seba United at the Elliston Wakeland Centre.

St James outfit Seba stayed in eighth spot on 41 points and must be careful being just four points above the relegation zone with three game to go.

At Drewsland, home team Waterhouse were held to a 2-2 draw by Sporting Central Academy after taking a two-goal lead in the half time interval.

The speedy Kirk Ramsey opened the scoring in the 17th minute before the pencil-slim Jonathan Williams doubled the lead in the 31st minute.

But Levaughn Williams pulled one back in the 48th minute then he was on hand again to clean up Jevaughn Watson's blocked penalty attempt, slotting home in the 90th minute.

Waterhouse which have not won in their last seven games, stayed fifth on 47 points while sixth-placed Sporting Central inched to 43 points.
