Portmore United all but wrap up the National Premier League (NPL) after beating Boys’ Town 2-1 at Collie Smith Drive Sports Complex yesterday to go eight points clear atop the table with four games remaining. The young and talented Michael Binns gave Portmore the perfect, start scoring in the 1st minute with a 40 metres beauty that had goalkeeper Kirk Porter in all sorts of trouble as he crashed into the upright and had to be substituted. Former National Under-20 captain Ricardo Cousins doubled the lead in the 21st from acute angle that sailed past substitute goalkeeper Philmore Crumbie. An own goal in the 90th minute made it 2-1 as a defender under pressure from Carlton Young fired into his own net. With second-placed Tivoli Gardens losing 0-1 to Sporting Central Academy, Portmore United has now opened up, what seems an unassailable lead and only an act of God can deny them of the title. The Linval Dixon-coach outfit from St Catherine, moved to 67 points with their season topping 19th win of the campaign while Boys’ Town remained third on 50 points.
At a late kickoff at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, the visiting Sporting Central Academy severely dented Tivoli Gardens’ title bid with a 1-0 win. The skilful Hughan Gray netted in the 35th minute for the Clarendon team’s 10th win of the season and their second over Tivoli Gardens from four meetings. Sporting moved to 42 points and remain in sixth position while Tivoli Gardens stayed second on 59 points and must win their four remaining games and hope for a miracle to lift the title.
At STETHS, Arnett Gardens held home team Reno to a 0-0 draw and a gained a crucial point in their relegation battle at the other end of the spectrum. Arnett which started the day in 10th spot on 35 points, only a point above the relegation zone inched to 36 points and are two points above 11th-placed team August Town. Reno from Westmoreland, moved to 34 points but remained at the bottom and are relegation favourite after failing to utilised their home advantage.
Meanwhile August Town where whipped 1-3 by Seba United at Jarrett Park and failed to gather a point but remained on 34 points and in serious trouble in their relegation fight. Seba moved to 41 points.
At Drewsland, former kingpins Waterhouse and dethrone champion Harbour View battled to ma 1-1 draw to maintained their positions in the standings. Vincent Earle gave Waterhouse the lead from the penalty spot in the 89th minute but Rafiek Thomas leveled the scores, also from the spot in the 90th minute for Harbour View for a share of the points. Fourth-placed Harbour View, which sacked head coach Lenworth Hyde Snr on Tuesday, moved to 48 points while Waterhouse stayed fifth on 46 points and must be planning for next season.
At the Elliston Wakeland Centre, home team Village United blanked St George’s FC with new coach Geoffrey Maxwell 2-0 to jumped to seventh spot on 42 points. Emile Thomas opened the scoring in the 35th minute before Fabian Dawkins netted in the 73rd for their 10th win of the season. St George’s which fired head coach Donovan Duckie on Monday, slumped to their second consecutive defeat have fallen into the clutches of the relegation battlers on 39 points in ninth spot. Village late season run and are fairly comfortable from relegation sitting eight points above the relegation zone with four rounds to go.
