Portmore United and Tivoli Gardens both scored wins over Seba and Waterhouse respectively to remain atop the Cash Plus Premier League on Sunday. Anthony Bennett netted in the 44th minute as Portmore edged Seba 1-0 to remain atop the standing, but just because of a better head-to-head record and a game in hand. The St Catherine-based team are on 56 points after notching their 16th win from 29 games and can go three points clear if they win their rescheduled game against Waterhouse. Seba United with their 13th loss of the season dropped two places to eighth with 35 points and have fallen into the clutches of the relegation battlers. The MoBay outfit are just four points above the 10th and 11th-placed teams.
At the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, title chasing Tivoli Gardens had to come from behind to edge Waterhouse 2-1 in an exciting encounter of free-flowing football. The towering Newton Sterling gave Waterhouse the lead in the 44th minute tapping home after Jomo Gordon’s shot across goal rolled into his path. But the home team fought back brilliantly and on the resumption of the second half, the skilful Sheldon Palmer levelled the score in the 46th minute. He latched onto a through pass, glided by national goalkeeper Richard McCullum and finished expertly although drifting wide. The cheering home fans didn’t have to wait long, in fact just seven minutes before taking the lead. The improving Kevin Blackford headed home a Christopher Jackson cross in the 53rd minute to send the fans into ecstasy. It was relentless pressure from Tivoli Gardens and a deserved goal. Tivoli with their season-high 17th win from 30 games, are second on 56 points and seem the only realistic challenger to Portmore United for the title with eight games to play. Waterhouse stayed fourth on 42 points, 16 behind the leaders and face a mammoth task to challenging for championship honours.
Meanwhile champions Harbour View all but throw in the towel after being held to a 1-1 draw with arch rival Boys’ Town at the Collie Smith Drive Sports Complex. National striker Kavin Bryan benefited from a goalkeeping error to score in the 32nd minute to give the visiting Harbour View the lead. But another error from goalkeeper Dwayne Miller allowed Boys’ Town to level the score. Denzil Watson capitalised in the 48th minute for a share of the points. Boys’ Town inched to 44 points and stayed third while dethroned champion Harbour View moved to 40 points, 16 behind the leaders. To make matters worse the Caribbean Club champion will be without captain and leading goalscorer Fabian Taylor who took a contract with Norwegian Club Nottenden FC. He left the island on Friday after signing on Thursday.
At the UWI Bowl, August Town scored a very important 1-0 win over Arnett Gardens in the clash of the relegation battlers. Mitchily Waul, on loan from Harbour View grabbed the winner in the 81st minute for his fifth goal of the campaign. It was August Town’s second consecutive victory and seventh from 30 games. August Town which has been rooted to the bottom of the 12-team league moved to 29 points and are just two points behind 10th and 11th placed Arnett Gardens and Reno FC in their relegation fight.
Clarendon’s Sporting Central Academy edged Portland’s St George’s FC 1-0 at Lynch Park courtesy of a 41st minute strike from Romaine Barnes. Sporting, coached by former Reggae Boy, Chris Dawes, were securing their ninth win to jump three places to sixth spot on 37 points in their first season in the top flight. St George’s seem to lost the invincibility at home and have dropped a spot to ninth on 35 points.
Over at the Elliston Wakeland Centre, home team Village United were held to a tame 0-0 draw by the struggling Reno FC but stayed in seventh place on 36 points. Reno out of Westmoreland, inched to 31 points but remained in the second relegation spot along with August Town with eight games remaining. |
