Two goals by Reon Nelson propelled Portmore United to a convincing 3-1 come-from-behind win over August Town and back to the top of the Cash Plus Premier League. Nelson, the league's top scorer notched his 13th and 14th goals in the 12th and 70th minutes while Anthony Bennett got the other in the 41st. Asphas Bernard had given August Town a surprised lead in the second minute but the relegation battlers were brushed aside in the same manner of which Manchester United did of Liverpool. Portmore with their 15th win of the season from 28 games regain top spot on 53 points the same as Tivoli Gardens, but with a better head to head clash and a game in hand. Relegation favourite August Town were suffering a league-high 15 defeat to remain rooted to the bottom on 26 points, four points behind 11th-placed Reno and five off Arnett Gardens whom they play next.
Over at Brancourt in Clarendon, title-chasing Tivoli Gardens dropped two valuable points after playing to a 0-0 draw with Sporting Central Academy. Tivoli, which started the day two points in front of Portmore, would not break down a stubborn Sporting Central unit. In fact, Sporting could have snatched all three points but for a few miss chances. Tivoli dropped a spot to be second on 53 points from 29 games while Sporting Central also dropped a notch to be in ninth place on 34 points.
In thew feature encounter at Drewsland, home team Waterhouse revived their slim chance of winning the title edging Boys' Town 1-0. The pencil-slim Jonathan Williams got the all-important goal in the 39th minute for Waterhouse's first win in eight matches stretching back to January 20. Waterhouse remained in fourth spot on 42 points from 28 games, which is 11 points behind the leader with 10 games remaining. For third-placed Boys' Town, it was a cruel blow in their title chase, dropping five points in the last two games to be on 43 points. At Jarrett Park in St James, champion Harbour View all but relinquished their title, drawing 0-0 with home team Seba United. Harbour View the Caribbean Club champions, was eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions Cup by American outfit DC United at the quarterfinal stage, and surely they have thrown in the towel in the league. The Stars of the East inched to 39 points in fifth spot, some 14 points behind the leaders and with only 11 games to go, faces a Herculean task of retaining their title. The Theodore Whitmore-coach Seba United are holding the final and crucial sixth spot on 35 points from 29 games. The MoBay team have garnered only eight points from their last eight games and faces a real challenge for the sixth spot Village.
Meanwhile, at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, the rejuvenated Village United continued their impressive third round form with a 3-1 whipping of home team Arnett Gardens. Former Arnett Gardens' left sided player, Lacon Brissett, scored a three timer to lead Village United to their sixth win from seven games this round. Brissett scored in the 1st, 49th and 65th minutes to take his tally to just four goals for the season and propelled Village to seventh spot on 35 points. Kevin "Pele" Wilson converted a penalty in the 18th minute for Arnett Gardens to level the scores but the home team faltered to their third defeat at home. The Trelawny-based Village, which languished at the bottom for the first two round of the four round league with just two win from 22 games, have rattled up an impressive 19 points in this round, the most by any team and have surged up the ladder. Meanwhile things seemed to be getting worst for former champion Arnett Gardens losing their second game in three matches and have not won since whipping Sporting Central 4-0 on February 24, 2008. Arnett remained on 31 points in 10th spot and are in the clutches of the relegation battlers Reno and August Town.
At STETHS, Reno utilised their home advantage to secure a 3-1 win over St George's FC courtesy of two goals by national invitee Obrian Woodbine. Woodbine struck in the 57th and 75th minutes and three minutes later Kirk Wright made the game safe in the 78th minute for come from behind victory. Denroy Gordon had given the visiting St George's of Portland a 35th minute lead but disintegrated in the second half for their 12th loss of the season. Reno was securing their first win in 10 games dating back to a 1-0 win over Village on January 20. The Westmoreland team remained in the second relegation spot on 30 points in 11th place. With only five points separating sixth to 11th places, the relegation battle will only get more interesting. St George's dropped two places to eighth on 35 points and have not won in their last six games. |
