Portmore open up three point gap as Village upset Tivoli Gardens

Portmore United extend their lead atop the Cash Plus Premier League to three points after crushing Sporting Central Academy 3-1 at the Ferdie Neita Park yesterday.

Meanwhile Tivoli Gardens slumped to an embarrassing 0-3 defeat to Village United as only two premier leagues games were played.

National invitee Reon Nelson grabbed a brace in the 10th and 80th minutes for his sixth and seventh goals of the season.

Defender Adrian Reid notched his third goal of the  campaign, scoring in the 61st minute as Portmore secured their 12th win of the season.

Tennyson Smith had briefly levelled the score for Sporting Central in the 44th minute but they couldn’t hold off the home team.

Portmore, playing under their newly-installed lights, move to 43 points, and opened up a three point gap at the start of the third round.

Sporting Central Academy which was losing their third game of the season to Portmore, stayed on 26 points in eighth place.

Over at the Elliston Wakeland Centre, home team Village United created the upset of the round so far, with a convincing 3-0 win over previous joint leader Tivoli Gardens.

Discarded national striker Fabian Dawkins scored twice in the ninth and 57th minutes to propelled Village to only their fifth win of the season from 23 games.

Dawkins has been instrumental in Village’s revival and was notching his seventh goal of the season as Village pushed in their relegation battle.

Ricardo Reid scored the other as Village won for the third straight time, continuing from where they left off at the end of the second round when they closed out with back-to-back wins.

The Trelawny-based Village which has been bringing up the rear of the table for two rounds, finally moved off the bottom to 22 points in 11th place.

They have leapfrogged August Town by one point and are just two points behind ninth and 10th placed teams Reno and Arnett Gardens respectively.

Tivoli Gardens which started the day in second position continued their poor away record and slumped to their seventh defeat.

The west Kingston outfit stayed on 40 points, but will remain in second place even after the other teams play their rescheduled games on Wednesday.
