Waterhouse join Tivoli Gardens in Second End-Of-Round final after 1-1 draw with August Town
Waterhouse did just enough to book a place into the February 10th Second End-of-Round final against Tivoli Gardens after battling to a 1-1 draw with August Town at the UWI Bowl. But First End-of-Round winner Portmore United, returned to the top of the Cash Plus Premier League with a convincing 3-1 win over Reno as Tivoli succumbed to St George's 0-1. Waterhouse, which started the day needing only a draw to advance, took the lead when last season's top scorer Irvino English, converted from the spot in the 45th minute. August Town's young player Mitchily Waul, who was acquired from Harbour View in the January transfer window, levelled the score in the 90th minute. Waterhouse ended the second round on 36 points to be in third position, four points behind the leaders Portmore United and Tivoli Gardens both on 40 points. Home team August Town ended the round on 21 points in 11th spot, but just three points behind the ninth and tenth placed teams going into the third round.
Over at the Ferdie Neita Park, home team Portmore United secured their 11th victory of the season and regained first place in the league after crushing Reno 3-1. Top schoolboy striker of Garvey Maceo, Ashton Bennett, opened the scoring with a header from a corner kick in the 53rd minute for his first goal in the premier league. Further goals by Reon Nelson and Eric Vernon in the 59th and 83rd minutes propelled Portmore to run out easy winners. Substitute Dwayne Plummer had equalised for Reno in the 57th minute, slotting home after a series of players missed a left sided cross. Portmore joined Tivoli Gardens on 40 points but are on top based on a superior goal difference. Westmoreland-based Reno slipped to ninth place on 24 points but has a game in hand against Seba United on Thursday.
Meanwhile Tivoli Gardens succumbed 0-1 to St George’s at Lynch Park in Portland. An 18th minute strike by Brian Wolderston was enough to secure St George’s eighth win from 11 home games. The promoted team remained in fifth position on 29 points in a surprising display so far at the end of the second round. Tivoli Gardens, which led the table for most of the second round, are in second place on 40 points but can take some consolation that they are in the Second End-of-Round final set for Sunday, February 10.
Champions Harbour View had to come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Arnett Gardens at the Compound. Arnett Gardens displaying two former national players in Onandi Lowe and Fabian Davis who were acquired in the January transfer window from Portmore United along with Oneil Robinson from Village United, took the lead from the penalty spot. Davis, who led Arnett Gardens to back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002, calmly scored from the spot in the 36th minute after Christopher Harvey uprooted Lowe in the box. But Harbour View struck back immediately as Kemar Petrekin fired home pass a host of defenders with goalkeeper Julian McLeish well off his line in the 41st minute. Harbour View have not won in their last four games and but remain in fourth position on 33 points, seven behind the leaders entering the third round. Arnett Gardens still unbeaten in five games since the return of coach Jerome Waite, was drawing their 12th game from 22 matches, which is the highest for any team. Arnett remain in 10th spot on 24 points and are expected to show mark improvement for the third round.
Cellar team Village United of Trelawny scored their second consecutive win blanking Boys’ Town 3-0 at the Elliston Wakeland Centre. Troy Smith with his fifth goal of the season gave Village a 44th minute lead that they never relinquished. Oneil Allen doubled the advantage in the 57th before former national striker Fabian Dawkins put the icing on the cake in the 86th minute with his fourth goal of the campaign. Village, which has been rooted to the bottom of the 12-team league, was securing their third win since the start of the year knocking off Arnett Gardens 2-1, Waterhouse 2-0 and now Boys’ Town 3-0. Village have closed the gap of the teams above them significantly going into the third round setting the stage for an interesting relegation battle. Village are on 19 points after starting the second round on only five points. The Andrew Price-coached Boys’ Town was suffering their third 0-3 defeats to end the round in sixth position on 29 points.
Over at Jarrett Park, home team Seba United blew a two-goal cushion and was held to a 2-2 draw by Sporting Central Academy. Veteran defender Norman Foster opened the scoring in the 45th minute from the penalty spot before Donovan Peart doubled the lead in the 53rd minute. But a spectacular long-range goal from midfield general Jevaughn Watson estimated at 70 yards, pulled Sporting Central to 2-1 in the 87th minute. Substitute Valentine Gardner then snatched the equaliser in the 90th minute for a share of the points. St James outfit Seba nevertheless climbed a spot to eighth on 25 points while Sporting remain in seventh on 26 points.
