Tivoli still on top despite goalless draw but Waterhouse close gap

Despite picking up only one point from their last two games, Tivoli Gardens remain on top of the Cash Plus Premier League standings after playing to a 0-0 draw with Boys' Town at Collie Smith Sports Complex yesterday.

Homesters Boys' Town peppered the visitors goal in the first half but could not find the crucial opening to inflict defeat on their bitter rivals.

Although there were no goals, it was an exciting encounter that kept the fans at the edge of their seats throughout.

Tivoli Gardens, which started the day on 36 points, inched to 37 and still maintained their one point advantage over second placed Portmore United, which also drew 0-0.

Boys' Town move to 23 points but drop a spot to ninth after not winning a game in their last five outing since defeating Arnett Gardens on January 2, 2008.

Over at the Ferdie Neita Park in St Catherine, Portmore were held to a 0-0 draw with champions Harbour View and failed to capitalised on Tivoli's slip up once again.

On Sunday, Tivoli crashed to a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Waterhouse but Portmore could only manage a 0-0 draw with Seba United.

Better finishing from the Portmore players could have seen the home team walked away with maximum points. Reon Nelson who scored four times against August Town on January 13, missed two of the easiest of chances.

Nelson, who had a successful stint with Trinidad and Tobago club team Joe Public, kicked wide from well inside the box with the goalkeeper nowhere in sight.

Moments later he got infront of his marker but misdirected his header from point blank range, much to the amusement of the spectators. It was harder to miss than to score. But he missed.

Portmore stayed second on 36 points from 20 games while champions Harbour View who also failed to win on Sunday, stayed fourth on 32 points.

Over at Lynch Park in Portland, veteran striker Kevin Lamey struck in the 58th minute for his fifth goal of the season as Waterhouse edged St George's 1-0.

It was only the second loss for St George's at home in nine games and the first since Seba won there 2-1 on October 21, 2007.

Waterhouse, fresh from their 2-0 win over leaders Tivoli Gardens on Sunday, moved dangerously to 35 points in third position, following a 11 game unbeaten run stretching back to November 25.

The promoted St George's, the surprised package so far, remain on 26 points in fifth place, after failing to win in their last three games.

At the Elliston Wakeland Centre in Trelawny, the visiting Sporting Central scored an emphatic 2-0 win the struggling Village United.

Wing back Owen Gordon watched in awe as his freekick intended for the back post sailed over the head of the goalkeeper Sheldon Brown and into the back of the net in the 4th minute.

Sean Mason then doubled the lead in the 25th minute with a long-range effort that wrong-footed Brown in goal to seal their win in their last four outing.

The Clarendon-based Sporting Central was the biggest mover of the day jumping from ninth position to sixth on 25 points. Village remained rooted to the bottom of the 12-team league on 13 points.

Over at the UWI Bowl, home team August Town had to come from behind to earn a point in a 1-1 draw with Reno.

The tall Fabian Blake fired the visitors into a 10th minute lead, ramming home from well inside the box. But August Town fought back gallantly for a share of the points, their first in five matches,

Debutant Jeremy Miller found the equaliser with seven minutes remaining in normal time much to the delight of the home fans. He latched onto a through ball and fired under the diving Dennis Taylor in goal.

The Westmoreland-based Reno dropped a spot to seventh on 24 points while August Town remained second from bottom on 17 points.

In the late kick off last night at Jarrett Park in St James, home team Seba United held Arnett Gardens to a 1-1 draw.

Horace Sharpe opened the scoring for Arnett in the 10th minute but Delroy Ellis levelled the game with a 28th minute strike.

The MoBay outfit slipped a position to eighth on 24 points while Arnett gardens continued the slow recover in 10th place on 22 points after languishing in the relegation zone for the several weeks.
