Newcomer St Georges FC and Waterhouse were the only two teams to secure wins as round two of the Cash Plus Premier League continued but Seba remained in top spot for the second week running.
St Georges out of Portland clipped Village United 2-1 at Lynch Park with Omar Brissett scoring a 25th minute penalty and Damion Harwood netting the winner in the 50th minute. Fabian Dawkins leveled the score briefly in the 47th from the spot. The home team took the lead after Harwood was fouled in the box allowing Brissett to convert easily from the spot. Village equalized also from the spot courtesy of Dawkins after the referee Hughill Thompson ruled that Donovan Davis handled the ball in the penalty area. But St Georges would not be denied and Harwood fired past goalkeeper Sheldon Brown for his team’s first win of the season, propelling them to joint second in the table with four points. Village, which suffered their first loss, remained on one point at the bottom of the table.
Seba United came from behind to hold Boys’ Town to a 1-1 draw at Collie Smith Drive for a share of the points which leaves them top with four points, but with a superior goal difference to St Georges and Boys’ Town. The diminutive Shaw McKoy opened the scoring for the Red Brigades in the sixth minute on a muddy outfield. McKoy’s right-sided cross somehow found its way into the back of the net. The Theodore Whitmore-coached Seba rallied and 27 minutes later they finally got the equalizer from Kemar James in the 33rd minute. James rose immaculately to head home a Patrick Lindsay cross past Philmore Crumbie in goal.
At the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium, former champion Waterhouse edged Portmore United 1-0 in the match of the day after Jomo Gordon converted an eighth-minute penalty for their first win of the season. Waterhouse, which lost in a seven-goal thriller last week to Seba United, got their winner after the elusive Damion Williams was brought down in the area. Gordon picked his spot and fired home on a wet Drewsland pitch. Six yellow cards were issued and two red which occurred for fouls on the wily and tricky Williams. Both Wolry Wolfe in the 44th and Eric Veron in the 90th, saw red trying to contain Williams. Waterhouse moved to three points from two games to be in fourth position just a point off the leaders. Portmore slipped from third to fourth with their first loss of the season on three points.
Over in Frome, Westmoreland, champion Harbour View could only muster a 1-1 draw with Reno FC and are still winless after two games on two points the same as Reno which drew 0-0 last week. Greeg Taylor gave the champions the lead in the 48th minute but Kendrie Quarrie equalized in the 90th for a share of the points.
Meanwhile Tivoli Gardens battled to a 1-1 draw with August Town at the Edward Seaga Stadium. Christopher Jackson scored for Tivoli Gardens. in the 23rd minute while Rollin Francis replied for August Town 52nd minute Tivoli moved to two points while August Town coach by Calvert Fitzgerald who coached Tivoli last season, gained their first of the campaign.
At the Spanish Town Prison Oval, Arnett Gardens played to the second consecutive 0-0 draw with Sporting Central in an exciting encounter. The newly-promoted Sporting Central was forced to play their first home fixture away from home because Brancourt was not ready to host premier league games. Both teams provided the spectators with some attacking football but failed to convert any of the chances that came their way. Both goalkeepers Julian McLeish of Arnett Gardens and Leighton Murray of Sporting kept the scoresheet blank with some outstanding saves. Arnett’s Leon Strickland missed the easiest of chances in the 76th minute, kicking high from just eight metres out.
