Former champion Waterhouse ended leaders Tivoli Gardens five game winning streak with a hot tempered 2-0 victory at Drewsland yesterday. Veteran striker Kevin Lamey curled in a freekick from just outside the box in the 59th minute before Jomo Gordon banged in the second in the 74th minute. Waterhouse, which started the day in fourth position, climbed into third on 32 points, just four points behind Tivoli Gardens on 36 points. It was indeed a magnificent weekend for Waterhouse, as their female team captured the Sherwin Williams Women’s Premier League with a hard-fought 6-5 aggregate win over Portmore Strikers over two legs on Saturday. It was also sweet revenge for Waterhouse which loss 0-1 to Tivoli Gardens on November 24. The Drewsland club also received sponsorship from Kingston Beer to the tune of J$3.6-million over three years.
Second-placed Portmore United failed to capitalised on Tivoli’s mishap and was held to a 0-0 draw by Seba United at Jarrett Park in St James. Portmore, playing with 10 men for 33 minutes, held the home team at bay quite comfortably for a share of the points. Portmore inched to 35 points, just one behind the leader and must be cursing their luck especially after dominating the entire first half in which they could have won the game from then. Seba dropped a spot into seventh place on 23 points but still has a game in hand.
Over at the Compound, Champions Harbour View also failed to close the gap significantly on the leaders, playing out a tame 0-0 draw with Boys’ Town. Harbour View slipped from third to fourth on 31 points but can take some heart from the fact that they are only five points behind Tivoli Gardens at this time. The Andrew Price-coached Boys’ Town dropped to eight on 22 points.
At the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, the resurgent Arnett Gardens scored their second consecutive win after changing coaches, blanking August Town 2-0 Substitute Shane Edwards, scored the opening goal for the home team in the 47th minute, after only being on the pitch for one minute. Edwards also contributed to Arnett second goal, feeding a through pass to Leon Strickland who fired home in the 90th minute to seal their fourth win from 19 games. Arnett Gardens remained in 10th place on 21 points in a cluster mid-table in which fifth to 10th are separated by only five points. Significantly, Arnett are distancing themselves from the bottom two and the relegation zone. August Town with their season high 11th loss of the campaign, stayed 11th on 16 points and it must be a bit worrying for the Hugh McCarthy coach outfit.
At Brancourt in Clarendon, home team Sporting Central recorded their fifth win edging St George’s 1-0 in the battle of the promoted teams. A Hughan Gray’s 40th minute freekick gave Sporting Central a crucial win after suffering a 0-2 defeat to Tivoli Gardens last week. However, a fracas at the end of the game involving match officials, security personnel and St George’s players, which led to four of the latter seeing red cards, threatened to spill over. The situation stemmed from a red card shown to St George’s’ Omar Davis for verbal abuse of referee Oneal Clayton after the final whistle. Seconds later Dwayne Holmes was also shown the red card for a similar offence. The Clarendon-based team remain in ninth position on 22 points while Portland’s St George’s stayed fifth on 26 points.
Westmoreland’s Reno continued to quietly climb up the ladder with a 1-0 win over cellar team Village at STETHS. Reno with their fifth win of the season move up to sixth on 23 points while Village stayed rooted to the bottom on 13 points from 19 games.
