Nelson stole the show for Portmore United

Leader Tivoli Gardens maintained their two-point advantage atop the Cash Plus Premier League but it was Portmore United’s Reon Nelson who stole the show with four goals against August Town.

At the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, home team Tivoli Gardens turned in a workman-like performance blanking Sporting Central Academy 2-0.

Sheldon Palmer opened the scoring in the 43rd minute slotting home from six metres after Christopher Jackson’s freekick deflected into his path.

National player, Jackson, then doubled the lead with his trademark powerhouse from 35 metres that also took a deflection and wrong-footed goalkeeper Leighton Murray in the 70th minute.

Tivoli with their 11th win from 18 games, moves to 36 points while Sporting Central dropped a spot to eight on 19 points.

At the UWI Bowl, the visiting Portmore United kept up the pressure on Tivoli gardens with a masterful 5-0 thrashing of August Town.

Reon Nelson, fresh from his stint in the Trinidad and Tobago league and playing his first game of the season for Portmore, struck in the 45th, 69th, 82nd, 90th minutes.

It was an own goal by David Lalor, which opened the floodgate in the 35th minute after Portmore’s Adrian Reid saw his off target shot, deflected into the goal.

Second-placed Portmore are on 34 points while 10th-placed August Town slumped to their ninth loss of the campaign to be on 16 points.

Meanwhile a hattrick by Fabian Taylor propelled champion Harbour View to an exciting 4-2 win over Seba at the Compound.

Taylor scored in 6th, 16th and 63rd to assumed sole leadership atop the goalscoring chart with 10 goals.

Three goals were scored in the dying moment as Seba’s Steven Irving pulled one back in the 90th minute. Harbour View’s Robert Scarlett, restored the three goal advantage in the 90+1.

There was still time for another goal as Kemar James scored in the 90+2 minute for his fourth goal of the season.

Harbour View jumped into third place on 30 points while St James’ Seba United remained in ninth position on 19 points.

Cellar team Village United registered only their second win of the season with a crucial 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Arnett Gardens at the Elliston Wakeland Centre.

Troy Smith converted a 20th minute penalty for his fourth goal before former Arnett player Lacon Brisset doubled the lead in the 31st minute.

Kevin “Pele” Wilson with his fourth goal of the season, scored a consolation goal in the 87th minute.

The Trelawny-based Village on 13 points, closed the gap at the bottom to just two points behind Arnett Gardens and just three points behind 10th-placed team August Town in the 12-team league.

At Collie Smith Drive, home team Boys’ Town were held to a 1-1 draw by Waterhouse after taking the lead late in the game.

Michael Campbell thought he found the winner in the 85th minute but his teammate Damion Benjamin put paid to his effort by literally handing Waterhouse a penalty.

A brilliant turn in the box by the wily veteran Kevin Lamey saw Benjamin handling the ball in his effort to stop the Lamey’s progress.

Referee Courtney Campbell immediately pointed to the spot and Lamey calmly converted from the spot in the 88th minute.

Waterhouse dropped two crucial points and one place to be on 29 points in fourth position while Boys’ Town stayed in sixth on 21 points.

Over at Lynch Park in Portland, home team St. George's had to come from behind to salvage a point in a 1-1 draw with Reno of Westmoreland.

Nicholy Findlayson converted his third penalty of the season for his fifth goal in the 29th minute but Damion Harwood notched his seventh goal with a 67th minute strike to level the score.

The promoted St George’s inched to 26 points in fifth place while Reno stayed moved up a notch to seventh on 20 points.

The competition takes a break this Wednesday and will resume on Sunday, January 20, with a full slate of games.
