Portmore maintain lead

Portmore United stayed six points clear atop the Cash Plus Premier League with a comfortable 2-0 win over Sporting Central at Brancourt on Wednesday.

The Linval Dixon-coached Portmore got their goals via Carlos Barrett in the 10th?????? and an own goal in the 90th minute to seal their table-topping seventh win of the season.

Portmore, the 2004 champions, move to 27 points while Sporting Central which was suffering their first loss at home, stayed on 14 points and have dropped one place to ninth.

In what was supposed to be an epic battle between two teams with a lot in common, Portmore showed why they have emerged as the title favourites with a classy performance and could have won by a wider margin.

The likes of Shawn Sawyers, Anthony Modeste, Adrian Reid, Wolry Wolfe, Carlos Barrett, Eric Vernon, Ricardo Cousins, Steven Morrissey and Kevin Deerr are proving a handful for opposing teams.

Second-placed Tivoli Gardens Tivoli Gardens, playing at home, edged cellar team Village United 1-0, courtesy of a 65th minute goal from the hard working midfielder Jermaine Taylor, to maintain a clear second position in the league.

Tivoli which loss the End-Of-Round final 0-1 to Portmore on Sunday, are on 21 points and are the only serious challenger to the leader at this point.

Trelawny-based Village was losing their seventh game of the campaign to be rooted to the bottom of the 12-team league on five points from 12 games. The Paul “Tegat” Davis-coached unit are the only team without a win so far and are early relegation favourites.

St George’s FC leapt from sixth to third with a comprehensive 2-0 beating of champions Harbour View at Lynch Park. The promoted outfit from Portland, have turned their home ground into a fortress, securing their fifth win, all coming at home.

Two late goals by Denroy Dennis in the 81st and Damion Harwood in the 90th proved enough for the Donovan Duckie-coach team.

They have added Harbour View to an impressive list, joining Village, Arnett Gardens, Sporting Central and Boys’ Town that have fallen prey at Lynch Park.

Meanwhile Harbour View, the current Caribbean Club champion, was slumping to their fourth defeat in six games and remained on 16 points in sixth position, already a whopping 11 points off the leader.

Since returning from their successful sojourn in Trinidad and Tobago in which they defeated Portmore United in the quarter final en route the Caribbean Club honours, Harbour View have not reproduced that form and already faced an uphill task of retaining their title.

Over at Drewsland, Seba and home team Waterhouse, which started the day in third and fourth places respectively, have slipped one position each after battling to a 1-1 draw.

Delroy Ellis gave the St James-based Seba the lead in the turning in a right sided cross in the first half  for his sixth goal of the season.

But the ever-dangerous Kevin Lamey, curled in a beautiful free kick to level the scores in the 78th minute for a share of the points. Both teams limped to 17 points and have a lot of work to do to stay in touch with the leaders.

At STETHS, home team Reno whipped Arnett Gardens 3-1 to jump into seventh position on 16 point. The powerful and hard running Gary McIntosh bragged a brace in the 16th and 54th minutes while Fabian Blake made the game safe for the Wendell Downswell-coach Reno.

Leon Strickland with his fourth goal of the season, pulled one back for the inconsistent Arnett Gardens which was suffering just their second loss. The red and black-clad Junglist slipped to ninth on 14 points and coach Max Straw could be in trouble as expectations are always high at Arnett.

At Collie Smith Drive, the visiting August Town were held to a 1-1 draw by Boys’ Town but must be cursing their luck after missing a penalty in time added on.

Daniel Shaw opened the scoring for August Town from the spot in the 44th minute but veteran striker Oneil “Chippy” McDonald leveled the scores with a cheeky freekick in the 49th minute.

Shaw then got the chance to secure all three points for his team but the tall Philmore Crumbie in goal, pulled off a brilliant save after narrowly failing to stop the first spot kick.

Boys’ Town move to 15 points in eighth place while August Town are second from bottom on 10 points and are in the second relegation position.
