Seba grab pole position

Seba United grabbed pole position after the first set of games in the newly formatted Cash Plus Premier League, scoring an exciting 4-3 win over Waterhouse at Jarrett Park in St James.

Two goals by Wilfred Smith in the 41st and 65th minutes propelled the 1987 champions to top spot and was ably supported by further goals from Delroy Ellis in the seventh and Kemar James in the 31st.

Seba’s victory gave former Reggae Boy, Theodore Whitmore, a winning debut as coach in what is touted to be the season for the Montego Bay outfit.

The 2006 champions Waterhouse through Desmond Breakenridge (36th), Kirk Ramsey (48th) and Jomo Gordon in the 76th minute, just missed out in the seven-goal thriller.

The home team Seba shocked their more fancied rival taking a two-goal lead, then hung on for a thrilling victory. Ellis opened the scoring before James doubled the advantage but defender Breakenridge pulled one back for Waterhouse.

Five minutes later Smith restored Seba’s two-goal cushion before Ramsey once again reduced the deficit in the 48th minute, making it 3-2. Smith made it 4-2 for Seba in the 65th before Jomo Gordon scored from the spot to make it 4-3.

Seba was joined on three points by both Boys’ Town and Portmore United, the only other teams to secure a win on the opening day.

At the UWI Bowl, the visiting Boys’ Town came away with a hard-fought 2-1 win over August Town, courtesy of strikes from captain Michael Campbell in the 37th minute and Mark Newsome in the 82nd.

Substitute Kemar Smith had given August Town a 74th minute equalizer and thought they had a point in the bag.

Three players were shown the red card by referee Howard Stennett. August Town’s David Stultz and Daniel Shaw in the 89th and 90th minutes respectively while Daemion Benjamin of Boys’ Town received his second yellow in the 89th minute.

Over at the Ferdie Neita Park in St Catherine, a 78th minute penalty by substitute Kevin Deerr carried Portmore United to a 1-0 win over newly-promoted Sporting Central Academy.

Deerr, who replaced the injured Newton Sterling on the resumption of the second half, was pulled down by Sporting Central’s substitute Gregory Lewis, who was on the pitch for only two minutes.

Referee Kevin Thomas immediately pointed to the spot and Deerr picked himself up and rifled past goalkeeper Leighton Murray from the spot. Portmore were registering their first opening win in three years.

The Clarendon-based Sporting Central showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with in a spirited display and were unfortunate not to have secured at least a point from the encounter.

Arnett Gardens and Reno played to a tame 0-0 draw at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex. Neither of the teams created much in a lacklustre affair that they will want to forget in a hurry.

The closest any team came to scoring was when Arnett Gardens’ Keon Clunis saw his free kick crashed off the crossbar and Reno’s Obrian Woodbine’s long-range effort forced the best out of goalkeeper Julian McLeish.

Defending champion Harbour View had to settle for a draw with newly-promoted St Georges FC of Portland in a 0-0 draw at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium.

The home team had the better goal-scoring opportunities but the new boys showed that they will not be easy pickings with a disciplined performance against the most feared attacking team in the league.

St Georges, returning to the top flight for the first time in 20 years, matched their opponents throughout in an encouraging display that will certainly lift their confidence for the remainder of the season.

Over in Trelawny at the Elliston Wakeland Centre, two late goals by Roland Dean earned Tivoli Gardens a 2-2 draw with home team Village United.

Troy Smith gave Village a 45th minute lead with a left-footed grounder from just outside the box. Leon Irving seemed to have given Village maximum points when he doubled the advantage in the 59th minute.

But with 10 minutes remaining former national striker Dean came up with two goals in five minutes. He guided home Oraine Simpson’s cross before latching onto a free kick to slot home for a share of the points.
