Meadhaven United grab pole position in NPL playoffs

Meadhaven United took a giant step towards promotion to the National Premier League (NPL) with a clinical 3-2 win over Rivoli United while York United upset Wadadah 1-0.

In their top-of-the-table clash at the Rio Cobre Field in St Catherine, it was the home team Rivoli United that struck first with Devon Hodges scoring in the third minute of play.

But Dwayne Williams and former youth player Dawayne Smith answered quickly netting in the 10th and 18th minutes to give Meadhaven the advantage.

Leighton Neita extended that advantage in the 45th minute with his second goal in two games.

Substitute Patrick Beech converted from the spot to reduce the deficit in the 74th minute but the visitors held on for an important win in their quest for premier league glory.

With both teams starting the day in joint first position on three points but Meadhaven has grabbed pole position in the NPL playoffs on six points.

It was also crucial especially playing away from home and coach Alrick Clarke is smiling from ear to ear.

Rivoli United, which has been in and out of the top flight over the years, remained in second spot on three points but only just over York United.

Meanwhile over at the UDC Field in Montego Bay, St James, home team Wadadah suffered a major setback losing 0-1 to the unfancied York United.

Substitute Kevin Bascome scored the all-important winner in the 64th minute to kick start York's campaign following their humiliating 1-4 loss to Rivoli on Sunday.

St Thomas-based York United which is trying to secure a premier league spot for a team from that parish in many moons, moves to third spot on three points in the four-team playoffs.

As for former premier league champions, Wadadah, which was relegated last season, the journey back to top seemed to be fading after suffering their second consecutive loss.

On Sunday they went down 1-2 to Meadhaven and are firmly at the bottom without a point with four games remaining of which only the top two teams qualify for the NPL.

As it currently stands, St James could be without a team in the NPL for the first time in the history of the premier league following Seba's relegation to the lower division.

But there is some way to go and Wadadah could bounce back in style as they have the players to do so.

The playoffs continue on Sunday with surprised leaders Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA)'s Meadhaven tackling York United at the Constant Spring Field and Wadadah hosting second-placed St Catherine outfit Rivoli United at the UDC Field.

Both games begin at 3:30 pm.
