Meadhaven United and Rivoli make winning start in NPL playoffs

Meadhaven United and Rivoli FC made winning starts in their quest to qualify for the National Premier League with contrasting victories yesterday.

Meadhaven edged Wadadah 2-1 while Rivoli United whipped York  United 4-1 for three well-deserved points as the four-team playoffs got going.

Former NPL campaigners Wadadah from St James, Rivoli out of St Catherine, Meadhaven United from Kingston and St Andrew and York from St Thomas, are the four contenders of which the top two qualifies for the premier league.

At the Constant Spring Complex, home team Meadhaven courtesy of goals by Leighton Neita in the 20th and Rohan Williams in the 30th minutes secured maximum points.

The tall and elegant but Rohan Reid had levelled the scores from a corner kick in the 27th minute for Wadadah but Meadhaven was not to be denied.

Meadhaven, which had won all the youth competitions under the astute guidance of the late David Hunt, added the KSAFA Super League and with the same core of those players coming through the ranks, are hell bent on reaching the NPL.

With a core of national youth players in Keammar Daley, Norman Bailey, Robert Palmer, Dawayne Smith, Kenneil Hyde, Lennox Creary, Shawn Hunter, Meadheaven looked as if they have arrived.

They match their more seasoned opponent Wadadah in every department and will make a bold bid for the NPL with five games remaining.

Robert Palmer who captained Calabar High to the Manning Cup title then switch and helped Jamaica College lift the title last year, missed a penalty in the 75th minute.

Over at the York Sports Complex in St Thomas, the visiting Rivoli United came out firing on all cylinders clobbering York United 4-1.

A four-goal blitz in the second half by Devon Hodges, Dwayne Hunter, Derrick Planter and Fidel Anderson swept  Rivoli to top of the table after one round with a superior goal difference.

Marvin Powell netted a late consolation for York United in the 90th minute but the St Thomas team was clearly outclassed.

The playoff continues on Wednesday with Rivoli United hosting Meadhhaven with York United travelling to St James to tackle Wadadah.
