Tivoli Gardens are once again the bridesmaid losing their second Cash Plus Premier League End-of-Round final 0-1 to Waterhouse at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium last night. Meanwhile Portmore United captured the Coca-Cola Under-21 title with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Harbour View in the curtain raiser. Tivoli Gardens, joint leaders in the league on 40 points, also lost the first End-of-Round final 0-1 to Portmore United in December. Waterhouse, the more dominant team, had to thank the towering Hugh Howell for their deserved victory in a final that produced few clear-cut chances. Howell, who was recently invited to train with the local Reggae Boyz squad by technical director Rene Simoes, for the Costa Rica game on Wednesday February 6, was left unmarked at the near post and he duly flashed in the winner in the 68th minute. It was a deserved goal, as Waterhouse had looked the more purposeful with Irvino English firing two well-struck freekicks that shaved the crossbar. In front of a large turnout at the Compound, both teams failed the gain the early ascendancy typical of a final, and as a result the first half ended rather tamely, much to the disappointment of the fans.
The second period was a bit better as the wily Damion Williams, Jonathan Williams, Vincent Earle, Irvino English, Newton Sterling, the tricky Leon Strickland and Hugh Howell took control for Waterhouse. It was no surprise when Waterhouse found the winner in the 68th minute as Tivoli Gardens were looking short of ideas. Tivoli Gardens with Navion Boyd, Roland Dean, Christopher Jackson, Denroy Gordon, Horace Howell, never really threaten the Waterhouse backline well marshalled by former Tivoli Gardens player Marco McDonald, Oneil Thomas and captain Michael Stone. Waterhouse for their winning effort, pocketed the $250,000 first prize while Tivoli Gardens collected $150,000 for their losing effort.
Meanwhile in the Under-21 End-of-Round final, Portmore continued their dominance of the age group league with another sterling performance, edging Harbour View 1-0. Steven Morrissey, who represents Portmore's senior team, took a drop in class and duly made his presence felt scoring in the 76th minute. It was a defensive blunder by goalkeeper national goalkeeper Dwayne Miller that allowed Morrissey to score the game's only goal in an evenly contested game. Captain Marvin Mundy headed a back pass for goalkeeper Miller but he was put under pressure by Morrissey and failed to gather properly providing Morrissey with an empty goal to score in.
